This is a Parish Council note aimed at those parents who currently have children at Backwell School either in sixth form or likely to join sixth form in the next year or two. 29th December 2018.
We have been fortunate as a village to maintain school bus transport up to and including Year 11 (old 5th form) where others have lost this service at year 11. What we have lost in the last couple of years has been the opportunity for parents to buy a school bus pass when the young person is in sixth form due to a lack of space on the buses. This issue then being compounded by the lack of public transport from the village meaning that at the age of 16 – having enjoyed school transport since the age of 4 – parents have been having to transport children at least to Yatton to then get a public bus or train. This is neither convenient for parents or good for the environment.
I am pleased to be able to let you know that – after months of negotiation with North Somerset Council – the Parish Council has secured a solution for our current and future sixth formers.
For £1 a day, sixth formers are now able to use the Backwell School bus at 08.00 in the morning to get to the Market Inn in Yatton so they can then get the train to Nailsea/Backwell. In the evening 6th formers will be able to catch the bus at 15.55 from the Market Inn to return to Kingston Seymour. The train from Backwell should get into Yatton at 15.50 and the bus will wait until 16.00.
To use the service you need to book it via the North Somerset School Admissions team via their email which is: schooltransport@n-Somerset.gov.uk.
The charge is payable in advance, £120 for the rest of the current academic year (Until July 2019) and £190 per year for those starting next September. A list will be held by the bus driver – and only those named on the list will be allowed to travel.
I appreciate this is not as good as a public bus service from the village or the school bus taking sixth formers all the way to Backwell. We may well in the future get this option reinstated as Backwell pupil numbers increase from Yatton as more of the new houses get built and more capacity is added to the service.
Hopefully this is a useful to some of you. It needs to be organised directly with NSC but is available from Monday 7th January 2019. If anyone is taking this up perhaps you could private message me on Facebook or use the Contact Form on the website to let us know.
