Advice from North Somerset Council:
There are a number of Salt/Grit Bins in Kingston Seymour and anyone can use the salt in these bins for public areas. It is illegal to use the salt on your own land and you could be prosecuted for stealing.
Use the salt sparingly. You need very little to prevent ice forming – 10 grams (about the weight of a £1 coin) per square metre – should be enough.
Make sure you use a shovel or a spade to get the salt out of the bin. It is very corrosive and could damage your hands if you pick it up.
Salt only melts snow when it’s mixed with it and turned into a brine solution.
If any of the bins are becoming empty, report it online to North Somerset Council – it’s in the “Do it Online” section – and they will come and fill it.
